The Houston Oilers were the first champions of the American Football League, winning the 19 contests, but they never won another championship. For the majority of their time in Houston, the team played their home games at the Astrodome, while Jeppesen Stadium and Rice Stadium hosted the team for their first eight years. Throughout their existence the team was owned by Bud Adams. The Oilers competed in the AFL's East division – along with the Buffalo Bills, the New York Jets and the Boston Patriots – before the merger, after which they joined the newly formed AFC Central. The team won two AFL championships before joining the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in the late 1960s. The Oilers began play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). That same year, a new organization, the Houston Texans were founded to replace the Oilers and began play in 2002 as an expansion team in the AFC South, creating a divisional rivalry between them and the Titans. The playing surface is often criticized while the end zones are always a mess, with “Nashville” being painted over a faded Titans wordmark. The Houston Oilers were a professional American football team that played in Houston from its founding in 1960 to 1996 before relocating to Nashville to become the Tennessee Oilers for the 19 seasons, operating out of Nashville, Tennessee for the 1997 season while traveling to Memphis for every home game at the Liberty Bowl, playing the 1998 season at Vanderbilt in Nashville, and then becoming the Tennessee Titans in 1999. Tennessee won’t be the only team impacted by the change, either, as Nissan Stadium also hosts college football’s Music City Bowl every December. “Just witnessing our practices inside and how they feel and how they respond on that product, we’re excited to be able to add this product to our stadium,” Vrabel said. They will now become the first team in the NFL with monofilament turf, which incorporates organic infill instead of rubber pellets. The Titans already use a similar surface at their indoor practice facility, and the reviews from players have been positive since it was installed last year. Those are real things that I’ve witnessed over my time here.” We try and put new sod down and it’s slick, you see guys slipping. “We’ve had a lot of issues after a certain part of the season,” head coach Mike Vrabel said. In fact, Tennessee set an NFL record with 91 players used in 2021 and led the league with 33 players placed on injured reserve throughout the 2022 season, most of which were lower-body injuries. The Titans have played on a natural grass surface since Nissan Stadium opened in 1999, but are regularly forced to replace – or resod – the field, which has become an issue late in recent seasons as injuries have piled up. “The turf is cutting-edge technology and will be a huge improvement in terms of consistency and performance.” “Ultimately, there’s just a limit to how much can be done for a natural grass surface in this part of the country,” team president and CEO Burke Nihill said in a statement.
